Marble is formed by the combination of limestone, heat and pressure, deep in the crust of the earth. These forces cause the limestone to change in texture and makeup. The process is called re-crystallization. Fossilized materials in the limestone, along with its original carbonate materials, re-crystallize and form large, coarse grains of calcite. Impurities present in the limestone during the re-crystallization period affect the mineral composition of the marble which is formed. The minerals that result from impurities give marble a wide variety of colours.

What is marble?
Marble has been used by man for centuries, mostly for buildings and monuments and sculpturing, but also inside buildings for cladding, as floor or wall tiles, benches and even countertops amongst various others. In modern day use marble is not necessarily always the best material for high traffic areas such as kitchens or commercial floors, nor exterior applications, due to fact that it is softer, and scratches easier than granite, and that its colour fades because of UV damage.
It is perfect though for use as vanity countertops in bathrooms, in tiling and cladding of walls, and even the tiling of floors in domestic houses. It brings immense beauty, elegance and sophistication to any bathroom or indoor living space. There are many a beautiful marble slabs to choose from on the the market today.

Onyx
Onyx is a unique natural stone that originates from dripstone deposits of limestone caves. When water drips from stalactites and stalagmites within these caves and evaporates a compound called calcium carbonate is left behind. This causes the stone’s colourful veins, swirls, and patterns that are unique to onyx. Therefore, onyx is classified a chemical sedimentary stone and can at times contain fossils and shells. Prehistoric animal skeletons have even been found preserved inside onyx!
